The memories of Steve Dukes

It is so telling of the man Steve was that even ten years+ after his death friends are still telling of his kindnesses and warmth. I worked with Steve at Publix many, many years ago when we were both in high school. He never met a stranger and he treated every person as an equal. Not perfect, however, he was a great jokester and if a roll of toilet paper came flying over one of the aisles after closing time you could be sure it was Steve at the other end. He was one of the most genuine young men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and I know you, as his family, will continue to miss him the rest of your lives.

I remember the first time I met Steve. It was in the late 70s or early 80s. We had our house on Hwy 92 up for sale and Steve stopped by to look at it and get info.
At the time, I was new to Dover, having been born and raised in Tampa. I remember him telling me that he was a strawberry farmer and that he was interested in buying our home because he didn’t want to live where he farmed. He went on to explain to me, a city girl, that when a farmer lives on his farm, everyone knows where he lives and will come by and take up the precious time he could be spending with his family.
It was very pleasant meeting Steve with his southern drawl and knowing that this handsome, friendly young man with the sweetest smile wanted to spend time with his family.
In all the years I lived in Dover, I never got the chance to speak with Steve again. But I'm very happy I got the chance to meet him. It is a very fond memory for me. Thank you for letting me share it with you.

What can I say about my "Best Friend Steve", I miss him more and more as time goes by. For those who do not know me, I am Steve's friend from Houston Texas and our relationship was let's just say "Special" to say the least. Steve and I were both on a cruise back in 1979 and I remember it like it was yesterday. We were arriving at a port in the Bahama's, standing on the upper deck, and all of a sudden this loud country boy starts talking to me," Hey partner, where you from" as if he had known me all his life. Within a few minutes we decided to go ashore together and explore the Island. From that point on we were together the entire cruise and just had a great time for the rest of the trip. We exchanged phone numbers, like we did with a few other couples, and we started talking on the phone at least monthly and sometimes weekly, depending on what was going on in our life at the time. We quickly became what both of us considered to be Best Friends and supported each other through good times and bad. I made numerous trips to Florida and Steve made trips here to Houston. I remember meeting Steve at Hobby airport one time when he was just flying through Houston to go to California to teach those farmers how to grow Strawberries, we even had a great time at the airport for a few hours. I could go on for hours about how Steve and I took care of each other and had a bond that to this day, is missing from my life. For now let me just say that I miss Steve more each day that goes by. It seems that the older I get the more I realize how special our relationship was. There is and always will be a void in my life that Steve filled in so many ways. I have met alot of people in my life but I have never met another person like Steve Dukes, he was truly a One of a Kind.
Miss You Steve,
Frankie Pizzitola

Looking back on the past ten years, we as parents of Steve, have had time to think of what a really special son we had. God blessed us for over forty years with our son who loved his Lord, family and friends with all his heart. His great sense of humor, smile, laughter and personality brought so much joy to all who knew him. His caring and loving spirit created a bond with so many in our community and we treasure the many stories we've been told of his helping hand to them. We truly miss him and his wonderful bear hugs so much but we know he's in heaven where God loves him more than we ever could and we look forward to joining him when God calls us home.
